Some facts: Wisdom Tooth is a misnomer. It has nothing to do with Wisdom!

It does not come out like the other tooth at an young age. Dentists advice us to have them extracted if they are impacted. This precaution is a safety measure to prevent future pains.

Those who go in for full set dentures get only 28 teeth unlike a full grown adult having 32 normal tooth.

If you need to be more knowledgeable read this:

Teeth formation starts when the baby is in the mother's womb! The permanent teeth is already formed and waiting for the milk teeth to fall.

Finally it is not compulsory to stitch. Much depends on the condition of the wisdom tooth prior to extraction and the way the dentist has managed the extraction. It is the most difficult one to access and as such difficult to extract.

Hello Commi...
it all depends on what position and condition Your wisdom tooth was in when it was pulled out(extracted)
after the procedure if there wasnt too much Gum or bone that was altered then i believe You wouldnt require stitches.
we usually use stitches(sutures) in cases where a certain amount of bone had to be removed cos the tooth was within the bone or if an incision(cut) had to be made in the gum to ease out the tooth.
the main reason stitches would be given is to help the wound heal faster. reasons stitches would help hasten wound healing:-
Keeps the edges of the wound together (Approximates the wound edges so newly formed (healing)tissue can bridge the gap faster)
Minimises the chances of food material entering into the wound
helps the wound retain the Blood Clot better to prevent a Most Horrid painful condition called DRY SOCKET
Wisdom teeth are located at the back of Your mouth and usually tough to reach making it hard to keep the area clean.
Sutures help "Close" the wound... therefore easier to keep it clean
Maybe the best comparison to sutures used in this condition would be a Band Aid used when U get a cut
Sutures takes a few minutes more but would help Your wound heal faster.
Sutures are never given if Your tooth was infected (Pus present in the area)-this actually prevents the pus from draining out and causes the infection to spread
Take care Commi and i hope You Heal soon.
Al

I've had 2 wisdom teeth extracted by a dentist, and I've loosened and pulled 2 wisdom teeth myself, and never had stitches. The only thing you have to worry about is infection and dry socket. Keep your mouth clean, and rinse with hydrogen peroxide a few times a day, and don't let the socket dry out, it can be somewhat painful. You can put a little dab of petroleum jelly in the socket to prevent it from drying out. It will heal on its own in a few days.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled years back. The doctor just stuffed up the empty sockets with cotton and told me to change the cotton out every so often. No stitches.

Today, there are no problems with my teeth back there.

I had all four of mine pulled in the same day, and some were impacted sideways.

No stitches, just lots of education about how not to get dry socket.
