We have a female boxer who is a year and a half old, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to clip her nails! When we first got her at 8 weeks old we followed the vet's instructions and touched her paws a lot to try to make her comfortable with us holding/touching her paws so nail clipping would be easier. It was fine until she was just shy of one year old- now she will not let us cut her nails. My husband and I have even gone as far as to physically lay on top of her and hold her down trying to cut her nails, but she always wriggles out of our grasps. We have taken her to the groomer and the vet but to no avail- she is not an aggressive dog AT ALL but she nipped at both the groomer and the vet when they tried to cut her nails. She allows you to touch her paws but for some reason when you bring out the clippers she goes ballistic and runs in the other direction. Does anyone have any practical advice for me? Her nails are getting really long and I am worried they are starting to get uncomfortable

Letting a dog's nails go unclipped can cause a lot of problems. Especially in a developing dog. It can "rock them back" onto their heels and put pressure where it isn't meant to be.

It's possible that the reason your dog had a change of heart about getting her nails clipped is because someone quicked her which is painful for the dog. I have a dog with very black nails and I have a really hard time clipping him. I do it myself though because he got way worse about it after I had the vet's office do it once.

I'm also considering trying to Dremel his nails based on "DoberDawn's" instructions.

My groomer will do just a nail clipping for $12. I'm sure groomers in your area have a similar thing.

My JRT tried to bite the vet when his nails were clipped, too, so she just put a muzzle on him.

this should not be a big deal... a groomer or a vet should be used to dealing with that type of situation.

Hi,
We had a male boxer, who has passed away. We had him 12 years. He also hated having his nail clipped. My husband started using a demeral tool not sure if the spelling is right. He would take him in a room by his self, shut the door. After a while he just got use to the sound and the feel of it on his nails. He still did not like it, but he did tolerate it.

My dog is the same way. I have someone else hold her by the neck, you only need one hand and not a lot of pressure to keep them down. Then we put a towel over her head so she can't see what is going on. She normally ends up relaxing after the 2nd paw.

People I know who have dealt with this get behind their dogs, grab their paws from the back, gently fold them under and clip them that way.
