1) recognize this is a child/a unique and valuable person in your company - and not a disease or disorder
2) allow the child to be who they are
3) set firm behavioral boundries that respect other people
4) set times and activities where this child can be loud and physically active to their heart's content
5) consider "sitting still and staying quiet" to come at shorter time intervals with "wiggle and noise" breaks more frequent than for the average child
6) patiently teach self-discipline on a continuing basis
7) when asked to sit, see that this child is out of the reach of other persons - such as in the car or at the table
8) explore whether diet issues affecting behavior exist for your child - if found, avoid or limit those foods
9) give lots of hugs, and look for things to prais the child for - there will be enough negatives along the road.
10) find and encourage the child in their area of natural giftedness.

We had 2 adhd children in our family. Our Dr. refused to medicate the children - gave us a few "tips" and said learn to deal with it - the child will have to learn their own self-control.
These are 2 of our "home remedies" that he gave that worked!
Just before being asked to sit at the supper table and behave, each of the children was to run outside, around the house. The more hyper the child, the more laps were asked to run. When each child was feeling a little tired and winded, Dad would stand at the door and say "Come on it to the table" IT WORKED!!! They were able to actually sit on a chair and eat their meal all the way through with a minimal amount of disruptions.

Just before bedtime, maybe 20 minutes, the Dr prescribed a cup of "Warm Tea - 1 cup warm water, 1 Tablespoon Cider vinegar, 1 Tablespoon honey." This little natural concoction would cause the child to slow down, and assist them to lay quietly enough to get to sleep.!!!

Medication and therapy are supposed help. I personally prefer doing my best without any of these, though. It helped me a lot just to read as much as possible.

I think that a good diet: lots of fresh fruits and veggies and as little sugar as possible may help. I also believe in taking Omega 3 and 6 (I use flax seed oil) and Vitamin B supplements.

My short term memory is shocking, so I started playing memory games online - the usual pelmanism. The games I use are for learning Japanese, but I guess anyone can play them. Find them here:

I think this is the best book on ADHD, it's written by a very well known author, whose writing I highly respect.
