Personally I reccomend pitbulls to almost anyone with some exceptions. If you have any little brothers or sisters under 5 or so I wouldn't reccomend a pit because they are so big, strong, and goofy that they tend to knock over little people when playing. Also, you have to put a lot of trainig into a pitbull. They are incredibly smart, but have very strong wills. You have to be able to show it that you are the boss without using any violence which can be tricky. They are usually very friendly and at least with the 5 pitbulls I know the most difficult thing is to train them to not be so friendly because a lot of people get upset when a pitbull comes charging at them even if it just wants to say hi. This also makes pitbulls very bad guard dogs. I dont know any that would do anything to stop an intruder. A friend of mine had his house broken into and when he got home his pit was covering in the bathtub in a pool of urine. There was no evidence that the dog tried to hurt the people taht broke in. My other friends will get involved if he is play fighting with someone, but mine wouldnt hurt anyone no matter what the circumstance. Labs are OK too, but I find them boring and very annoying as puppies. My brothers lab steals my shoes every time I go to his house so I dont like him too much. The most important thing to remember when you get a pit is that it will be a lot harder than getting a lab. People that dont even know your dog will hate it and will probably hate you by association. Your dog will have to act perfect always in public or else you will give pitbull hater more ammo. In my opinion this is well worth it for a breed of dog that is overall the nicest, most personable, friendliest, smartest, and funniest in the world. Good luck!

Lab. Good natured and very easy to train. I had a pit bull at your age though and she was my best friend. I think you should let the puppy pick YOU out.

Pit bulls are not good pets. A lab would be better and are pretty looking.

I say keep in mind their activity levels, you don't want to get an energetic dog if you're laid back because the dog will get depressed, you also don't want a laid back dog if you're energetic or you'll be bored.

As for handling, don't think of it as handling, think of training, you can train dogs easily and one should always train a dog well.
