Can someone tell me if I can legally travel on my passport which is still in my maiden name? I have got 7 years left on it but begrudge paying the £66 just to change the name on it.

Last year I travelled on it from Luton to Edinburgh with Easyjet even though my ticket was in my married name but I took my marriage certificate as proof and they accepted it. Can I still do this or should I book a ticket in my maiden name?

Thanks for all your answers but what I really wanted to know was whether it was legal to travel on my maiden name and for how long? Got 7 years left on passport and have been married nearly 3 years. Can I still use my maiden name legally? All my other ID is in my married name.

I just think that the charge of £66 just to change a name is the taking the mick, but that's the government for you I suppose!!

Travelling within the Uk will not have been a problem as you didnt cross any borders and staff either end owuld be very familiar with the marriage certificate, however, staff at airports abroad will not be and therein lies your problem. Yes, I agree the cost is ridiculous, but it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run if you change it over, either that or you book any flights in your full maiden name so thay do perfectly match, staff at immigration couldnt care less if you are married or not, its matching names that matter and how you fele about using your maiden name

It probably didn't matter so much flying within the UK as the passport is just used as a means of identification, not as a 'licence' to gain entry into a foreign country. I would book overseas travel in your maiden name because the name on the ticket is supposed to be identical to the name on the passport. I have heard of people being refused because a name was spelt Steven on one and Stephen on the other for example.

Book the ticket in your maiden name. They are far more strict now, and you have only a certain amount of time before you have to change it. I think its 6 months and then you cant travel with your maiden name and marriage certificate

I would book the ticket in your maiden name as teh name on the ticket should matchj your passport and the last thing you need is to get told at check-in you can't fly!

As long as the name on your ticket matches the name on your passport you will be fine.

Easyjet prob only let you do this as it was an internal flight but for going on holiday and with a reputable travel agent, it will be a different story if you have two diff names.

In Edinburg you will find good times out and get the within scoops on the most effective little-known areas waiting to be discovered. Edinburg can be for family times out to national pursuits. If your passport is in your maiden name then book your ticket in your maiden name. my friend goes by both her married and maiden name in certain situations and she recently travelled to germany in her mainden name.

It will be necessary to have your passport amended if you plan to travel abroad.

Some countries might not accept an unamended passport even if you carry your marriage certificate (you can check this with your travel agent or the country´s consulate), so it´s well worth having the name changed on your passport well in advance.

Personally I would change it to ease my mind. You know how things are at passport control these days and it just takes one being awkward to send you back home - at what expense. £66pound is a lot of cash - but it will bring you peace of mind. Bon voyage!
