ok so my bf is dropping hints that we're getting engaged in 08. For now I'm wearing his class ring as a commitment ring. But we can't figure out where to file a marriage license..He keeps bringing it up and now it's got me thinking..My friends filed the paperwork but didn't have a ceremony...so he's leaning toward that...but where would we file it? In my town or his?

In Mass, it doesn't matter where you file (what city or town) as long as you get married in the state, the license is recognized throughout.

However, marriage licenses are only good for a set time, usually 90 days (only 60 in Mass) so it's not something you would have to worry about until the rest of your plans are set...then you can just file where ever you are going to have the ceremony!

PS...don't rush into marriage if he hasn't even (officially) proposed! You'll just end up with even more stress...

Normally the minister, priest, judge, etc. file the certificate of marriage in the county and state your vows were performed in.

Or at least that is the way it has always been.

You'll need to find out what the county clerks office says is required even to get the license as some states require blood test and waiting periods.

I don't think that is matters what city or town your file at. I know in Virginia it does not matter what city or town you file it is cause it is good in the whole state. You just need to check with the state and find out

You file where you are going to get married. and just cause you file for a license doesn't mean you are married. The Certificate has to be signed by the peron who marries you and you get a copy the person gets a copy and the courthouse gets a copy; that is what makes it a marrage not the license.

In NJ, you get the marriage license in the town the female lives in, regardless of where you are getting married within NJ.

That means you must call your town office of vital statistics and ask them, but if you are not engaged yet you have time.
