You need to identify the wiring from the ceiling and the fan (from the diagram with it), but since you appear to have no electrical knowledge I suggest that you enlist the service of an electrician to carry out the work safely. The colours you describe could be any of a dozen or more combinations!!
Miss Terry's diagram will only confuse you more as it shows US colour codes! I assume you are in the UK from your description?
Mike - Positive and Negative refers to DC or a battery supply. In the UK we refer to 'live 'or 'line' and 'neutral' when referring to ac mains wiring systems.

Red is the POSITIVE connection. Black Is the NEGATIVE connection The green in the Ground. As for the rest, just ignor them.

usually, the only wires you need are black white and green,(hot, neutral and ground) the other colored wires are for the optional lighting that may or may not be included. they do their best to "dummy-proof" those things. so all you need to do is connect same to same. if you don't have the light kit, cap or tape the wires that are not in use and tuck them out of the way, then connect black to black, white to white, and green to ground.
