I have owned dogs for many years. Both large and small breeds. Currently, I have 5 adult dogs and a puppy. The puppy is a Pekingese. It's a 4 month old male. It gets along fine with the other dogs, has learned to lead on a leash, come when called, and shake hands for a treat. The problem with the dog is that it will not learn house training. I have had remarkable success with crate training all of my other dogs, as puppies. (I have an adult Pekingese, as well) This puppy will only go potty in its crate. Often it will roll around in its mess.
I usually end up bathing the pup at least 6 times a day because of this. I've tried scented puppy pads and gated off a small area in the kitchen for the puppy to roam around in. He won't use them and waits to go until he's back in his crate. I've even soaked the crate in odor remover and even purchased a new crate, so the smell wouldn't be there. He still does the same thing. What do I do ? Any ideas ?

More details. Yes, I got him at a pet store. I have tried confining him to small area like you suggested. He simply will not go on the pads ever. He held stuff in so long once he got a bad infection .
He required antibiotics for 2 weeks. The second time I tried confining him with pads out of the crate, he did the same thing. Only this time it was 3 weeks of antibiotics.
How can I make him go potty when he doesn't want to go and holds long enough to get sick ?

Stop using the crate! He has obviously learned that this is where he is supposed to go (did you get him from a pet store?). He will never learn to eliminate elsewhere if this option is available to him.

If you want him to be trained to eliminate on puppy pads, cover a small area with them and keep him confined to that area when you are not able to supervise him. Take him to that area when it is time for him to eliminate. Praise him and give him a treat when he goes in the right place.

If he is going to be trained to go outside, confine him to a small area when you are not able to supervise him. Take him outside when it is time for him to eliminate. Praise him and give him a treat when he goes outside.

Supervision will be exceedingly important! The more accidents he has, the more difficult training will be. Make sure to take him to the appropriate spot as soon as it looks like he has to relieve himself.

Housetraining can take one year, and small breeds tend to take even longer.

I notion you had been going to get a Shih-Tsu... If this man or woman is breeding combined dogs, then she's a garden breeder. DO NOT acquire a puppy from her. If you desire a combined-breed puppy, undertake one from a refuge or rescue. If you desire a pekingese, you might do plenty of study and move watching for a reliable breeder, otherwise you might move via a pekingese rescue and even discover one at a refuge as good. No ought to purchase a puppy while there are multitudes of them in shelters. (additionally, "hybrids" are animals because of 2 one of a kind species mating. Dogs that experience 2 one of a kind mum or dad breeds are simply mixes)
