This is something that sociologists of education have been fighting for decades. The way the current system is set up is not fostering to learning for most adolescents as it goes against teens' natural circadian rhythms (when you are awake and asleep). Furthermore, teens need 9-11 hours of sleep a night, but htey don't naturally fall asleep until 11-midnight. Then school starts at 7:30/8:00. It doesnt' compute.
HOwever, the reason behind it is that it is easier for parents since it matches their work schedule and it is supposed to get you ready "for the real world".
But as far as getting a good education goes, it doesn't work.

Define "early".
"Early" to me is 4am or so. I've always needed only 4-5 hours of sleep, even as a teen.
Why waste your day sleeping?
Laziness is kicking our American butt.
As long as I can remember, my father insisted that we be up, out of bed, and ready to go by 6am everyday. Even if we had nowhere to go. Just find something but stay out of bed.
I can't tell you how that has helped me to this day.

Aw, c'mon--if school opened later, everyone would just that up that much later the night before. (It'd also be more of a shock to have to go to work on time later.)

It's still based on the old fashioned system of when people needed to be home to tend their farms....also it's focused around when most parents work...

The education system is meant to sap your spirit and crush your dreams. What better way to wreck a few dreams than to pull you out of them in the wee hours?

Would you rather they open later, so you wouldn't get out until after dark? That wouldn't be any fun.
