Seriously, I'd rethink getting a dog until your child is older. But if you are determined, I'd go to a rescue group and find a dog over 3, already house trained, good with kids.
Rescue groups have the option of evaluating dogs ahead of time. The breed isn't as important as the temperament.

many dogs are child friendly.but remember its like bringing a new baby into the home. and three is a better age to inflict a new baby on the baby. remember the puppy does not belong to the baby. baby is not old enough to be responsible . and will set a precedence for baby's responsibility. mommy and daddy will start [even now] being responsible for baby's things. we had a great dane when our 3 children were little. and Gulliver was the best dog ever with children . so i really think it depends a lot on how the family trains a dog . i do not think a pit bull would be good though . but i have met very user friendly ones.

If you ask me frankly, no breed is suitable for a two year old kid. The breed which is nearest to suit your requirement is a Labrador Retriever, also called a 'Nurserey' Dog'. But even then you should never leave the dog and your kid unsupervised. Dogs are extremely territorial and they think kids will encroach upon their territory, or sometimes the dog may be a shy dog and attack the kid unprovoked. Better get a dog when the kid is at least five years old.

Dogs with children are wonderful ideas. My husband and I both grew up with dogs, as kids. That why we are raising our 2 toddlers with dogs around, as well. We have a 2 year old and a 3 year old toddler. We have 5 adult dogs and a puppy, as well. We have a German Shepard, a Black Lab,
a Great Pyranese, a chihuahua, a pekingese, and a pekingese puppy.
My adult Pekingese is the best with my two toddlers. It is so cute to see them play together. He'll even bark when the kids do something they shouldn't. He's my second set of eyes where the kids are concerned.
Thats one reason we got another Pekingese puppy.

I have had a Yorkshire Terrier and that is the absolute best. He was so protective of my children and at times, just seemed to act like a sibling, more so than a pet. I don't feel u need to wait until the child is older. You teach kids how to love and care for pets, just as u teach them not to touch things or pick up their toys. Another plus for the Yorkie is that it's easy to train, doesn't require too much space and often acts as an alarm system. When u get to my walkway, my Yorkie let's me know ur coming.

There are lots of breeds that make great family pets...and some of the best are the mutts at your local shelter.
Be aware that ANY dog will bite if it feels threatened, and a toddler needs to be well supervised in the presence of the dog. Toddlers are prone to poke and tease animals to get them to play. The animal may not respond playfully, but aggressively instead. It is a challenging mix, training a dog and a toddler. But, since they both thrive under consistent discipline, it might work well for you.
Personally, I waited until my youngest was 5 or 6 before getting a dog. I wish you well!

I've owned several different types of dogs, and in my opinion my pugs are the best with children. Pugs have a reputation of being the most children friendly. They take them in as best friends and are even (females, anyway) very motherly of them. My pug used to bark when my toddler got near the stairs, as if to warn both us and her (regardless of the baby gate that was placed there). Generally, people recommend big dogs with small children because they are more apt to take the "rough" play that a child can deal out (tail pulling, etc.) but pugs are extremely tolerant of this. There is a really neat video you can watch that shows a pug and a child growing up together. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pug+and+baby+best+friends&search=Search

lots of breeds are good with kids but few dogs will tolerate a 2 year old, especially a puppy. They tend to pull ears, lay on the dog, pull its tail etc. Babies don't know all that hurts. Labs are good but big and a lot of work, also golden retriever.

A golden Retriever is one of the best family dogs. They are kind and patient with children. Your child will need to be surpevised to make sure he doesn't hurt the puppy, but they are very loyal and so loving to all in the family.
Just make sure to find a very good breeder and look at a few. If the pups are very jumpie and seem overexcited then walk away. Golden pups should be calm and just as curious to see you as you are to see them. Find someone who really knows the breed and has been a good breeder for a long time. You hsould be able to see both parents when you go to look at the pups. If the breeder doesn't have both parents then walk away and look for another breeder.

Hi! My family loves dogs, unfortunately my kid bro is allergic to fur so I had to wait till i moved out for college to get a lil pup. There are lots of family dogs, but it depends on the size of dog you'd like. If its the big and cuddly kind, then i'd suggest a golden or Labrador retriever. They are amazing creatures: intelligent, loving, loyal and very very patient with kids. They are adorable as pups too. I had one when I was growin up and never once did it get mad at me or my family But be warned, they do shed a bit.
If you like small dogs, then i'd suggest Miniature schnauzer's. They are extremely playful and very very cute. They are always full of energy and as far as I know, kids love them instantly and these terriors love playing with kids as well. They are a bit talkative tho but they don't shed at all coz they belong to a hypoallergenic breed.
Hope this helps!! :D
