My boyfriend asked me to marry him and we are planning a medium sized wedding. My sister claims that since I am already pregnant I can't wear white but I found a really nice white summer dress that I want to wear. Can I go ahead and get the dress that I want or should I look for some other color dress?
This is causing a major rift between my sister and me. I say i can wear the dress cause it isn't a big fancy wedding dress and she says no way only virgins are allowed to wear white dresses for their weddings.
I want to show her that it is okay for me to wear this dress but she refuses to hear any such thing. Normally we see eye to eye on everything.
Why is she having such a problem with this?

Your sister does have one point white is supposed to indicate the woman is pure and a virgin. But now a days that seems to have gone out the window. You can wear any color dress that you want.
I am getting a beautiful white wedding dress for my wedding and I lost my virginity back in high school. Besides they even make maternity wedding dresses nowadays and most of them are white.
Just tell your sister that it is YOUR wedding and not hers and you can wear what you want. I am pretty sure she is just trying to look out for your reputation. But people are already going to talk. They always do.
Congratulations on both your upcoming wedding and your coming baby.

As long as its not a huge white satin beaded ballgown....I say go for it! Nowadays people wear all different shades of white and ivory! If its a simple white summer dress I think that wouldnt be tacky.

As for why your sister is makin this such an issue....if you're close she probably looks up to you in a way. Getting pregnant and then married IS still kinda taboo so she might be a little disappointed. That is probably the main issue and the other taboo issue of the white dress thing is just pushing her buttons. Tell her its your wedding and to get over it. At least you're not 4 months pregnant and trying to get away with the huge ballgown and play it off as a honeymoon baby! Hopefully she'll get over it!

Either way...congrats on the wedding AND the baby!

Weddings always cause some type of controversy for everyone. Mainly because the family feels like they are losing to the person that is getting married. It is your day and you should be allowed to wear whatever you want. If she loves you more than a silly tradition then she will let it go and be happy for you on your day. There are no rules on how you should do your wedding, I've seen a bride wear a black dress before (gothic style). It's a representation of you not everyone else.

The idea of virgins wearing white is an old tradition that is quickly going by the wayside. These days, it really doesn't matter anymore. However, if it is an issue, ivory or off-white is acceptable. My wedding gown was in a color called candlelight, which is halfway between pure white and ivory. Frankly, I think pure white dresses look horrible in the pictures anyways. If the dress you like is pure white and cotton, you could probably tea-dye it.

because you're getting married and things are going to change between you to. I had the same problem with my sister when she got married. we stopped talking to each other for like 6 months and I couldnt stand her fiance (because he was taking her away from me). well she changed alot after her wedding and our relationship has not been the same since.

Aside from that though, I think your sister has a point. You shouldnt wear white to your wedding. it is a priviledge for virgins to wear white on their wedding day and you are no longer a virgin. white is a simbol of purity and even if this has been the only guy you've been with you should try maybe an ivory color or a beige or champaige color.

Wear the dress that you want. Only virgins wearing white is a thing of the past. Tell your sis to grow up.

Okay, yes, your sister is right....white is the color of purity, meaning virgin. HOWEVER.......This is 2007, rules change ALL THE TIME!!! I am having a vow renewal, and though I obviously am not a virgin (I've been married already for 5 years and have 2 daughters) I am still going to wear white. This is my day and I'll be damned if someone is going to tell me what I can and can not do!! You should have the same mentality. This is your day, not your sisters. I wish you luck on both the wedding and the baby. Congrats on both as well :)

White dresses being limited to virgins is over-that hasn't been the case for a really long time-probably decades. You can wear any dress you want, regardless of your status. She's probably just feeling a little upset she's losing her sister (in her mind) and is lashing out. She may be feeling jealous. In any case, I would try to involve ehr where you can, and if she doesn't approve, you have to tell her to keep that sort of stuff to herself becasue it hurts your feelings.

The white wedding dress was actually originated by Queen Victoria and didn't have anything to do with virginity... that interpretation came along later.

Wear whatever you like and wont mind seeing pictures of yourself in for years to come.

Congrats on your upcoming nuptials and the pregnancy

You can wear white, it is your wedding. If everyone went by this old tradition, there are very few women who could wear white. Don't let anyone make decisions for your wedding. My girlfriend was 8 months pregnant and wore white to her wedding!
