This is a new age! Stop being old fashioned and ask them for the date. Ask early because if it wont work you need time to ask someone else. Forget all the rejection thoughts: Guys deal with that all the time. It is a modern era, now you can deal with it too. Bring up the subject of the prom. Ask if they have a date for the prom yet. If not, say I really want to go but I dont have a date either. Then say let me know soon if you would like to go because I am looking for a date.
Now you just inderectly asked them out. And if they were being scared to ask you they will ask. If they really want to go they now feel comfortable asking you. If they dont want to go with you, wouldn't you rather find out early so you can work on someone else? accually repeat this to every guy you like till you get a date.

Why don't you suck it up and ask them if you really want to go with them. Either you can sit back and be dissapointed when they dont ask you or you can take it into your own hands and ask them. You can't really "get" a guy to ask you out. they will if they want to, or not.
