Prop the door open so that he can see in and out. Go on the other side, either in or out depending on whether he likes to be inside or outside best. And offer him a treat, if the treat isn't incentive enough. You can pretend that you have found something very interesting out there. The curiosity will nearly drive him mad and he'll rush thru the door. Slowly close the door a little bit more each time and eventually he'll have to feel the touch of that door on his side as he goes in and out. Once he realizes that the door isn't going to hurt him, and the touch isn't anything bad, he'll start to use it on his own with out having it propped open.

I've always used pet doors (can't imagine having a dog without one!) The treat system is the best. When the dog comes out - give plenty of praise! Do this for about 3 or 4 days and the dog should be totally trained. (Has always worked that quickly for me) If he has an accident in the house, be very stern and tell him "outside" and put him out of the doggy door. Good luck!!!

Make sure you have a few dog treats in your hand. Call your dog towards the pet door and offer him/her a treat. Go out of the door and close it behind you making sure the the dog is still left inside. Call your dogs name and hold a treat by the opening and your dog will know what to expect when he passes through the opening. Give him the treat once he appears.

Easy. Put him on one side, you on the other with some tasty treats. Open the pet door slightly so he can see you and call him through then give him a treat.
He will be using it in no time.

Have someone on the other side of the door call for him, slightly nudge her through so see can see the other person, they give him a treat, Then reverse it, you call him, have the other person do the same, Soft voices, and calm. Do it about 6 times, so he will learn the door is not going to get him.

1. Fill the dog's bowl with food
2. Throw the dog out
3. Close the door
4. Wait
If that doesn't work, eat the dog's dinner. The dog obviously couldn't be arsed to make an effort.

When I was trying to teach my boarder terrier puppy to use a dog flap my husband and I stood each side of the door and passed her back and forth, she also copied the cat and this seemed to do the trick!

Get on the other side and call him, have a treat for him, you may have to hold the treat through the door so he can follow it through the door.
