Maybe not. Artificial Vanilla Flavouring actually won a Cook's Illustrated taste test. My issue with the artificial stuff is just that: it's artificial. I like to use only the purest and freshest ingredients when I cook or bake.

Vanilla flavoring is added to the mix with a slight but ever so importance. Your palate appreciates the enhancement it provides. Trust me. It makes a difference. It does help, don't listen to anyone that says, "Oh, it is useless". They do not know what they are talking about.

I ignore the "add vanilla."
Pure vanilla is actually alcohol. Vanilla flavor is not.
The difference is the same as subtituting Rum with rum flavoring.

It makes recipes sweeter. I have used the vanilla flavoring and it's worked fine.
