I just used a new exercise machine a couple of days ago and I still have muscle soreness in my outer thighs and upper arms. Today, I am scheduled to lift weights in the afternoon. Is it safe for me to do so? Do I need another day to recover? If it's safe for me to lift weights, should I lift lighter this time?

I'm also sore in my butt muscles as well.

I don't skip when this happens. Just be sure to stretch and warmup really well before you start to workout. Start out with light weights and it will fade away. Once it does then you can go heavier. If it doesn't stick with the lighter weights. What you are experiencing is the muscles growing.
After your workout get in the sauna or take a really hot bath and you will notice the soreness will be much less sore the next day.

All tests show that you should do some excercise, not strenuous, not heavy weights, but some sort of excercise the day after you work out too hard, or your muscles will stiffen up worse. Two days later the pain is usually worse. No pain, no gain is a lie if you take it to extremes. Muscles need time to recover to grow. Do the weights, don't over-do them.

It won't hurt to do weights today. It also wouldn't hurt to wait another day. If you are up for it, go for it.

I did weights yesterday and am sore, but will still do a step class at lunch time today. I will have a break from exercise on the weekend so my muscles can heal.

Sore muscles is a good sign. Means your muscles will be stronger once they heal.
