Considering the Civil engineer is working on transportation or structure how often would the engineer(s) be at the site?

I am strongly considering a Civil Engineer degree and would like to know about this. What type of engineer jobs would be available for new Civil engineers with a BS? Would I be employed as a field engineer when first starting out, and how long are they on the construction site?

Any input from a civil engineer, someone in construction, or anyone who has an answer will be appreciated.

It all depends on the company and the position. Many civil engineering students say they want to be in the field, then find that upward mobility is critically limited by being in a field position. Many companies employ "field engineers" to have someone on site that is capable of answering technical questions and performing oversight. No matter what kind of engineering you decide on, the further up the ladder you move, the more you will have to be in an office. It's not all bad though. Being in the field all day can be very tiring, and from experience I can tell you it is nice to be able to split your time. I would suggest getting a surveying job, where you will be in the field 95% of the time, and exploring your options within the company. Most surveying companies also employ many civil engineers, and you would have a chance to really explore what everyone in the company does. You will probably have more success in transportation with this strategy, but you could make it work with structures as well.

Most of the Civil Engineers usually went to a site to examine and take test samples and that was usually a day or two. The rest of the time on the project was done working from drawings and information in the office. Some of the Engineers never left the office using project managers to do all of the onsite tasks. Some engineers were constantly out in the field. It all depends on the position and the project.

Not very often. You would mostly be inspecting the plans that are made and check for structural defects etc. You would basically be responsible for signing off on construction plans.
