Don't worry. You're not screwed. You missed the next part of that verse: "visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments."
Love God, obey His commandments, and come to understand the truth about Jesus Christ in the Bible and you will be shown mercy and love...not death and destruction because of your father's sins.

I am a simple person so I do not have an answer. However, my beautiful son did believe that the sons had to pay for the sins of
the father, and recently committed suicide. His father was/is weak
of character and hence committed a grave sin and ended up in a two year sentence in prison. Our son was deeply affected and never seemed to recuperate.

This is referring to man having to suffer for Adam's sin. It is NOT referring to what many call the "Original Sin" which is the basis for infant baptism.
The original sin and infant baptism are creations of men and are NOT taught in the Bible. In fact, we can see from the following verse that just the opposite is true. You are not doomed because of something your relatives have done. We are all responsible for our own actions.
"The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." Ezekiel 18: 20

Yes you are doomed.
Exodus 20:5 / Deuteronomy 5:9
for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing CHILDREN for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me
Bummer that's the 2nd commandment

For every seed we plant, good or bad, there is a harvest. This is not just from a religious standpoint, but a general one. If you do something, those around you are affected by the outcome and consequences. If you screw up, you are setting the stage for your children to be harmed by those actions.

The genetic damage is passed on sometimes dormant sometimes manifesting itself in every generation.
The way your father related to you has a HUGH effect on how you relate to others
The way your father related to your mother has a HUGH effect on how you relate to other women
Some damage can be over come by reprogramming some damage is permanent (you will pass down to your generations)

The secular phraseology is "The apple doesnt fall far from the tree.
"Sin can be generational - for example, if your parents were alcoholics, there is a good chance that you will stumble in this same area.
If your parents were impoverished, there is a good chance that you too would be impoverished.

It speaks of a generational curse....
Which, by the way....Jesus can break by becoming a Christian.
We are held responsible for the sins of Adam & Eve....but Christ broke the curse of sin and death....
Praise God.

There's another quote that cancels that quote;
"The fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall the children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall die for his own sin.'" (That command, by the way, is found in Deuteronomy 24:16.)
