Actually, I have gone to school with other students who were Muslim and I have worked with people who are Muslim and I don't think that my perception was ever better with regard to my fellow human beings than how we all reacted when we watched the Trade Center on September 11th. We all stood there in shock. The only thing that was different was the fear that it caused within my friends who follow Islam. Fear of retaliation, isolation and persecution. Unfortunately, their fears were justified. The American condemnation of Islam was set in motion and went rapidly downhill. My friends haven't changed, but people's perception of them has. You would think that by this day and age we could rise above the petty, narrow habit of categorization and labeling. My friends are still wonderful people and I still feel blessed to know them. That will never change despite what George Bush tells me to believe.

Because people fear what they don't understand. People go by what they have been taught when they were young and was re-enforced over the years by society. Since most conservative religions only to their faithful or those who wish to convert and do things behind closed doors, most people don't have the knowledge they could gain by learning about the next religion.
Unfortunately, 9/11 hurt the relationship between Muslims and the rest of society. Since most of the country simple heard "Muslims" and "Islamic Terrorists", the public assumed they are one and the same. Which, of course, they are not.
The best way to avoid people being scared of each other's religion is to meet halfway and openly discuss their beliefs and traditions. This way people can put their prejudices to the side and start to bridge the gap between religions.

i think it's more like the fear of the unknown..people think that we muslims are some crazy species that live only to kill..i mean come on, you can do better than that!we do not live in a cartoon world and its just amazing how even though the world keeps shrinking that there is so much ignorance about our religion.islam has been viewed as the forbidden territory;where no one is allowed to trespass!Au contraire, mes amis, we muslims are all the more happy whem people are curious about this beautiful religion.we are all human beings and we condemn violence and terrorism as much as you do..it's just that our cries are gone unheard of or ignored.to admire a painting you must look at the whole thing and not just a corner of it.all the little things do count.so if you are one of those who hate islam because of something you heard, i request you to please research and confirm these things. and even after that your opinion about islam is negative, then i guess there's nothing much we could do..

There are a few in my neighborhood, but they don't bother me. I haven't seen any bomb making, guns, or anything else disturbing (ha-ha). I never classed all muslims together in the first place. Everybody is different and just because you look different or believe differently than I do, doesn't mean that I won't like you. I'm sorry that you live in an area that treats you so poorly, but I don't see that in my area of the country.

Probably because people who were Muslim bombed our country and said they did it for their religions sake. I'm not saying all Muslims are bad but feeling wierd around a muslim because of what some did in your God's name is the same as people who do not like a christian because of what some who bomb abortion clinics in God's name do, it may be extreme people who do those things but it puts a bad face on a religion. Of course especially americans may be somewhat disinclined to Muslims because what happened has really changed our country and of course it would make us skeptical of other muslims.

Those people who are scared are usually the ones brainwashed by the media. Anywho, there are very few muslims in my area (they're more north...or in some other direction, i'm not sure=)) and I've always wanted a Muslim neighbour. Oh well, I wouldn't be scared!

Cannibalism? That's a new one. I have heard some pretty outrageous claims about Muslims but that's new to me.

I have no fear of Muslims. What you're talking about refers to people believing in the media, who will pretty much believe anything they hear or read.
