I'd like everyone to throw petals of a rose. Colors would range in Reds, yellows pinks whites etc.....
a soft petal feeling in your face is not abrasive instead very soft and soothing.....
in the hands smooth and silky it will be something fragrant and romantic for the occasion..
I would then top off the occasion by having each guest release one single dove

I completely agree. I'm getting married in Sept and do not want anything thrown at me, I think that's kinda tacky. Everyone does bubbles as well, so that was completely out of the question for me. I decided to use bells, there is a cute little poem that goes with them. (“This tiny wedding bell salutes the Bride and Groom and the joy that fills the room. Ring it loud, when they are near, so all may hear the pledge of love they hold so dear.”) I also went to a Naval wedding in Annapolis, and they had streamers on a stick everyone waved, except again, no one waved them.
Hobby Lobby has a bridal sale going on now, with everything 50% off, but it expires on Saturday. We bought our bells last night!

Rice was done away with forever ago - because the birds were eating it - and then it would expand in their stomaches and they would get really sick. Also - people would slip on the rice and fall. Thus - they went to birdseed - but you said you don't want to use that.
A lot of people do bubbles now. You could do that.
Or - you could have everybody "throw" compliments or best wishes at them. Just have them yelling things out like "Have a great life!" "You're both beautiful and we love you!" Whatever.
There is also a practice called a "whisper walk" where someone (or I'm thinking it could be a couple) is blindfolded - and they walk between two lines of people - and as they do - everyone whispers something loving in their ear. I know this is kind of "out there" regarding what you should "throw" at a bride and groom. But - it just popped into my head so I thought I'd share it.

Have you thought about having people blow bubbles instead of throwing things at you? When you plan to leave instead of throwing things have everybody line up and blow bubbles! I think that is very nice. I don't know of anything other than bird seed or rice! bubbles are cheap to you can buy them buy the dozens at almost any craft store or at wal-mart.Or the guest could throw confetti ! A lot of the craft stores sale it for wedding days. Bubbles or confetti are the only two things I can think of! Good Luck! Congrats on the big day!

some places do no longer enable something which will leave a muddle on their grounds. instead of throwing some thing at them, attempt forming a lane of travellers retaining sparklers (timing isn't hassle-free because of the fact sparklers do no longer final long and the couple will race to the door of their journey even swifter) if the reception is interior the night. Bubbles look good interior the photos on a sunny afternoon.

The bubbles are very popular. You can also give everyone a card that has a bell attached and instead of throwing or blowing, when the Bride and Groom Exit the site everyone can ring their bells.
For as they say every time a bell rings and angel get their wings.

At my sisters wedding, we went to our florist and got a ton of flowers (bulk) and took all the petals in every color of the rainbow, and had 2 girls to walk around with them in baskets, people took a hand full, and threw them up in the air as the bride and groom walked out, the pictures were incredible! It looked like confetti, and the bright colors were striking against all the white of her wedding gown.

We did rose petals at my wedding. Depending on the wedding size, it can get expensive. So, what we did was go to the grocery store florist before the wedding and bought dozens of roses, plucked them and put them in to small squared netting, wrapped with ribbon and attached a piece of paper with a poem and our names to the ribbon. These bundles were passed out after the ceremony and the petals were thrown on us as we left the church. It made for beautiful pictures. I recommend it!

Rice hasn't been used for years - bird seed was substituted for rice, as people going hungry objected to seeing rice thrown at people. Little sachet bags made from net have been used, or just sachet, tossed by hand.
