Large credit card charge. The item in question was not what it appeared to be, but if I had looked closer at the website I might have been able to figure it out. I realized only hours after internet purchase I had been duped. Freaked out and reported card stolen. Now they want a police report and I'm just really stressed about the whole thing. If I tell the truth am I going to have to pay? What should I do?

Contact the credit card company and tell them the truth about everything. Tell them exactly what you did and why.
the company you bought from over the internet has a history showing the I.P. address associated with your order which means that if someone stole your credit card thy also used your internet connection to place the order and they can show this to the credit card company to make you pay,, so don't lie to them about having the card stolen. Just tell the credit card company what you did and take what's coming to you and learn from the experience.

Committing perjury will not help. The correct thing would have been to dispute the charge. If it is an Internet purchase they captured your IP and can trace the purchase back to you so reporting the card stolen was a mistake. Now do some damage control. See an attorney. Let them handle it for you. The alternative is to do nothing and likely they will recharge you for the purchase and close your account. Keep up the payments and you'll be ok.

addenda Jo Blow gave good counsel above. Better to sound like a flake than get charged with a misdeamenor

You could call the company and ask to verify what is being done regarding your card. When they say that you reported it stolen you could say that the person you talked to previously misunderstood and that you meant they had stolen from you by scamming you. And go from there.

Yes when a card is stolen they want a report in order to absolve you of the debt. But if you do this and they follow it up the company could prove that it was charged via your IP address. Then you are screwed and will have no recourse to fight the people who ripped you off. So aside from the first part I think I would call and fess up. Once that is sorted you can contest the charge and then take it to court if you have to. You could then do research to prove the company rips people off. So all in all...... just call the card company. Not later..... now!

Call the cops and tell them you found the cc and must have misplaced it. Then deal with the cc company, tell them the same thing. Maybe you can return the item for credit. I would assume there is a return policy on the item.
