Distalgesic/co-proxamol now fortunately discontinued on safety grounds in the UK. No anti-inflammatory properties. Contains paracetamol, a perfectly good pain killer, and dextropropoxyphene an opiate with little potential for pain relief but high potential for addiction.
Solpadeine unfortunately still available! Now carries an addiction warning in the pack. No anti-inflammatory properties. Contains paracetamol and codeine again an opiate with little analgesic property. Addictive and causes constipation, abdominal pain and headache.
Ibuprofen excellent anti-inflammatory pain killer, but can be hard on stomach. Occasionally causes fatal gastro-intestinal bleeding.
Oedema from cut finger, normal body response to injury/infection. If low grade will go on its own. If redness and swelling extend may need oral antibiotics.

Swelling around an open wound can be a sign of infection. If the area is also red, hot or painful, you might have an infection and should consult your GP straight away.
If the area is not red then the swelling is part of the natural healing process.
You can try an over the counter anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen but do talk to your pharmacist about it first.

Please dont ask people on here what medicines to take!!!!
Phone NHS direct on 0845 46 47 or your GP surgery!!
We are only normal people and even if they say they are doctors how can we believe them!!!
Or ask your local chemist, get a number from yellow pages!
