Some are hot & some are not so hot,it is the chemical capsacin that is responsible for the heat factor, hence cookery experts tell you to do away with the inner membrane & seeds where most of the chemical lurks. The brain is involved to an extent as it is with most sensations,in this case it is a little confused making us believe we are in pain.hotness of chillies is measured in schofield units, the higher the units the hotter the chillie, gemerally speaking the smaller the size of a given variety of chillie, the hotter it is.

You havent pointed out if your talking about the band (in which case they are great and almighty) or actually chilli peppers. If your talking about the latter then OMG they are terribly disgustingly hot...some people like it that way but it aint in my mind. Im sure i heard once that they contain something that gives you that burning mouth feeling but maybe it was in a dream

Hello There, please visit the web-site below. It is very informative about this subject. Chilli's Taste, variety, hotness etc.
In this country we generally use Habanero chill. its about 5cm round. BEWARE these are one of the hottest chillis you can get. Apart from the heat if you get that far they have a wonderful fruity flavour. Close cousin to the scotch bonnet, they come in all colours. Used in salsas, chutneys and Caribbean cuisine, mixing especially well in salsas with fruit.

Depends on the type of pepper.
Some are very mild, others have insanely high quantities of capsin and are as hot as you think they are.
Discard the white membrane though (not the seeds as some say) and you get rid of most of this

Chilis are not really hot. The active chemical in them, capsaicin, stimulates the pain sensors in your mouth, but not the heat sensors. So they are painful but not hot. Since nothing else does this, your brain doesn't know what to make of it, so it interprets it as heat.

They can be really hot. There is a chemicle in them called capsaicin that makes them hot. It's not imagined, it's real.
