I have sat in front of one for 12 hours or so (at least twice) to finish off a University assignment and in the early morning felt 'burnt'. It was weird, but I felt it and I know that there is some sort of impact.
I am also concerned for my eyes. I want a new LCD screen, but am interested in some real stats, other peoples' experiences and medical thoughts on my health (skin, eyes and other, long term and/or short).

Everything gives off radiation. TV, alarm clock, Hi-fi etc. etc.

It won't damage you, just take regular breaks away from the screen.

Actually, yes it is bad. Depending on your age. After several hours you will notice it creates stress on the capillaries and small nerve fibers in your eyes. It also overstimulates your sympathetic nervous system where your body starts to enter a "flight or fight" stage, stimulating hormones are released. This is due to the light. For example, if you are in a dark room the opposite occurs, melatonin is released. If your young and in good health you can probably go many hours. To avoid these effects you must take breaks and look away from the screen to focus on objects that are far away. I'm in my mid 30's and in poor health so after about 3 hours I notice the effects. My eye doctor told me he feels these "stress" effects after about an hour, he's in his 50's. For best results adjust your monitor so its not too bright, create a nice level of ambient light in the room.

The answer as to if the new LCD monitors are better, not necessarily. Some of them put off more irritating glares than the older monitors. I changed back away from the LCD TV and monitors because I found them to be emitting more stress on my eyes, but I'm sure you could find a good one. A smaller monitor probably is better. It can affect peoples skin too and some get a condition called roscea (red blushing skin). If your monitor is too (bright and glaring) you can get a special "sunglass" screen to put over it, I think I may have heard of rose tinted computer glasses too - that works too. I've gone with the bright screen and the shade screen over it and its worked just like turning down the controls. Limiting computer use is always healthier, too much of anything is bad
