Get a crate and crate train him. Life will be easier for you and your puppy. There are lots of websites about crate training. Make sure the crate isn't too big, or he'll pee on one end and sleep on the other. Make sure he gets outside a lot and praise him when he pees or poos outside. Make sure he get outside right after eating. Eating seems to stimulate the digestion and they're likely to have to go then. Good luck.

I am going through that right now...

As far as house-training goes, always take your puppy outside 20 minutes after he eats. You should restrict his food (but not water) during the day; only allow him to eat at certain times. Once he goes outside, give him the treat outside. Don't wait until you are back inside to give him the treat because he will associate what he did with being inside/getting the treat. Also, don't make a big deal out of it if he has an accident in the house. Dogs love attention, even if it's negative. If they have an accident in the house simply pick them up and take them outside.

If you are having issues with your puppy nipping or chewing on things that he shouldn't, firmly tell him NO and give him something that he can chew on. Repitition is the key...

Hope this helps...I am still learning with my 3 month old basset hound!

I agree with swish. The perfect thing is crate training. I will add to it not to use the crate as punishment. If you do the pup wont like it the crate. Give him a treat when you put him in there. Keep him in there when you leave the house for work and at night. The first thing you do in the morning or come home is go get him out and carry him outside (with no talking with excited voice) and let him go potty. When he does make a big fuss about it with lots of praise. Also walk him after eating.
Also don't yell at him when he has an accident. Clean it up without him in the room. They don't remember what they did so shoving their face in it and yelling doesn't help. You can yell "NO" only in the act of the accident.
Good luck.

The best thing to do is to walk him/her plenty and go past known "hot spots" where dogs do their business. The puppy will pick up the scent and nature will motivate him/her to take care of business there. When he/she does go, give an instant reward. It shouldn't take long for the puppy to automatically let you know when it's time to go out.

There will be times when the puppy can't help itself, but if you put a pad at the door you typically exit with him/her, the puppy likely will go on that since it's the closest thing to outside.
