Pain, swelling, redness at the site and sometimes fever. (and lots of screaming and crying) I would give pain medicine before he gets his shots at least 15 mins before.

Before your child gets the shots, ask the doctor what EXACTLY he's getting. They should tell you what side effects to expect in relation to the specific shots your child is getting.

Generally at a year, the kids get MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Varivax (chickenpox) or those two combined into one shot called Proquad.

The side effects that I know of related to these vaccines is a little fever (no more than 101.5) for two days at most. Maybe a little cranky. The only other one is a slight rash from either vaccine anywhere from a week to ten days after the shot.

If you have someone who is in close contact with your child who is immuno-compromised (i.e. just had a transplant or is undergoing chemotherapy, etc.) make sure your doctor knows so they can tell you how long it is before your child can be around that person. Usually it's ten days, but double check to be sure.

He will definitely be in a bad mood, or my son always was. He always napped as soon as we got home or even on the way home. As far as getting sick normally you can ask the pedi for some Tylenol and just keep that in his system for 24 hours. The Tylenol if given every 6 hours will help with the pain, and the fever (which normally is the only side effect). Good luck. Oh, by the way just a warning it is harder on the mom than the child.

Since your son is turning one I assume you have had many other scheduled shots already ( from infancy to 4months, 6months, etc.) Your son will probably respond the same way he did to those other shots. He could experience a wide range of things from nothing at all to the occasionaly crankiness and in some cases very cranky. He may get a mild fever or just seem extremely tired. All those are okay. I forget what shots they get at one but his doctor should tell you any red flags to look out for. It may help if why your waiting for his doctor to give him some infant Tylenol especially if he didn't respond to well with his other shots. Other than that give him a little more hugs and kisses and it may take a little extra patience but he's do just fine. It's always worse on the moms than on the kids. Good Luck!

When my little boy was having his shots I would give him tylenol about 30-45 minutes before the visit and make him wait for his nap until after the visit. Your little guy may be a little grumpy and probably will be sleepy, he'll probably take a long nap and go to bed early that night. But he will be fine just keep the tylenol every four hours for until the next morning, watch the injection sites they may be a little sore and you need to try and be calm and strong for him while he's having the shots it will help him be less scared. Good luck!

Honestly you child should have had shots before...several times actually. You should expect the same results as before.

He will probably be a bit lethargic, less energetic as usual.
If he gets sick, you should call the doctor if it's not the usual symptoms for the type of shot.

He might get a little fever, but he's probably getting shots he's had before, so if he was fine before, he'll be fine now. Expect a little tenderness at the shot site, but if you give him a dose of infant tylenol about an hour before, that will help. Just give him extra cuddles; he'll be fine. And good for you for keeping up with his immunizations.

The nurse giving the injection normally explains side effects but he may not get any. If he does be prepared for a whingy, clingy baby who wants to just sit down and sleep. He may run a temperature so make sure you get plenty of calpol etc in to sooth him!

Could have tenderness at the injection site, an increased temperature and grumpy. Then again - could have nothing. Give him some infant Tylenol or Advil about an hour before you go. He may want to nap after. You sound like a great mom!!

Aside from what the others have said except for the first poster who is just immature. There is a numbing cream you can get by prescription. i would put it on my son and hour before the appointment, cover with a band aid and he never felt the shots. I dont need comments about not teaching him to deal with pain, he is a boy and gets hurt everyday!!
