It depends on the severity and the reasons.
I was invovled in an accident. I am a woman and was travelling on my own. The other driver was agressive and we agreed that no damage was done to either cars. We were only travelling at around 5 mph.
The next thing I know I get a letter from the Police saying I had left the scene of an accident.
I got in touch and explained why and it was all fine, nothing happended to me

If you get caught. You probably wont go to jail(as long as no one was hurt). You'll get hit with an expensive ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. Your insurance company will probably drop you and it will be difficult to find reasonably priced insurance, and you could get your license suspended.
It really depends on where you live.

Need some details here! Was it only property damage, or was there personal injury involved? What Country? What jurisdiction? Without these details it could be a violation, or a felony! Hard to tell!

The police will come and find you if they got your license plate number, you are looking at the very least an expensive ticket, even worse if there injuries or death.
