I'm thinking about getting myself a heavy bag. The only thing stopping me at the moment is the fact that I have plaster calls and ceiling. That means that I don't know if I'm going to be able to hang something that heavy off of it. Does anybody know anything about this kind of thing? I'm also living in an appartment, so I don't want to annoy my neighbours. Any suggestions? I've already thought about getting a stand but at the moment that is not an opption, since they don't seem to sell them europe (well UK but I'm a little further away than that). thanks for the help!

Sam ~

Spend a couple more bucks and get a freestanding bag. I normally never recommend a sporting goods store for anything to do with boxing but most sell models as to where you can put water, sand or anything else for weight in it's base. Ringside.com sells similar products so you might want to look at them to, but they are basically the same thing in this type of bag, Ringside might offer you a bag that looks and shaped like the torso of a man. It depends on what you want.

The freestanding will save you from putting any holes in your walls or ceiling. This way you get back all of your security deposit.

Thanks for question Samantha H and good luck.

You don't want to hang your heavy bag off plaster, it won't support the weight. If it doesn't piss your neighbors off, which would be my number one concern living in an apartment, you need to find where the 2X4 beams are that supports your roof and hang the bag off of that. If you decide to hang the bag don't just use an eye bolt and hang it off of that. The 2x4 will bend and eventually break. Buy or order a heavy bag mount which can attach to the 2x4. it will take some of the pressure off of the 2x4 and you should be fine. You can even order a spring that can be used off the chain that attaches to the bag. That will further take stress off the 2x4 and probably dampen the vibration so you don't piss your neighbors off. Go to ringside.com you should be able to find both pieces I'm talking about and more importantly a quality heavy bag if you don't already have one. Good luck.

addition- - - Sam, Santana gets best answer, completely forgot about a freestanding bag. Peace

Usually behind the plaster are studs, or 2 x 4's so if you use either a stud finder, or simply rap upon the walls to find the sound closest to a thud of solidity you could sink the screws into that spot as to hang the bag effectively.

Small holes made with a very small drill bit can find the stud as well, just that you would then need to fix the small holes, re-plaster them....or toothpaste as filler

no, the vibration will crack the plaster! once you should carry it, you should screw a 2x4 into the ceiling, THEN carry the bag from the 2x4, yet i'd not recommend it with a plaster ceiling, won't be able to you get easily a kind of stands that could carry the bag?
