Easy. Fill the 3 litter twice and dump it into the 5 litter when the 5 litter is full you will have 1 litter left in the 3 litter container.
That was on Die Hard 3 when he was trying to disarm a bomb!

Fill up the 5 liter, pour it into the 3 liter, and you have 2 liters left in the 5 liter measure. Now you will have to eyeball it and pour half into another container, then you will have very close to 1 liter!
