Without a doubt....1 million % YES!!!

Today's kids don't know how to work for anything. Their parents are to busy chasing after the "Jones" and just hand their kids everything. Parents forgot how to say no.

Military or Community Service would be a great stepping stone for young people today. It will teach them RESPECT which so many kids/young adults are so lacking!!!

Not at all. Not everyone has military potential in them. Defense of this great nation isn't the only thing needed to contribute to your country. Being productive is another way. Doctors, teachers, police officers, firefighters, store owners etc. Anyone with a job and is paying his taxes is helping his country. As long as the young people are in school and working towards success they are doing their part. People who are lazy and use up the tax payers money should however be forced to work for their money and benefits. Criminals who are not punished by jail time should be punish with community service rather than just probation, or a slap on the wrist

Everybody in the world wants to come to America, because it is the best society to live in. I feel that everyone that is a citizen, owes it to themselves and the government, to participate in some program for a year or two, such as the military or community service, of some kind, and provide some service for the marvelous opportunity to be here. - People becoming citizens should do this also. Perhaps for a little bit longer.
For sure, it should be mandatory to do this prior to receiving the right to vote. - People caught in this country illegally should have to spend that amount of time in a labor camp, before being deported.

Community service if they choose. 12 months in the military is a great waste of time and training. You never get the return on the investment. Military needs to remain as it is, volunteer and 6 yr minimum commitment.

You bet. Most 18 year olds have a very selfish outlook on life and would benefit tons from serving their country or their community. Most other countries already make military service mandatory.

It's a great idea. Too many kids from both ends of society think that the world owes them something. Kids who grow up rich never learn the humility of working a menial job for low wages, and kids who grow up on welfare think that their fellow tax-paying citizens owe them something because their mommy was too lazy to get a job.

The middle-class kids wouldn't even notice a 12-month commitment. It would be like a vacation.

There should definitely be the option of community service instead of the military, but it would have to be something like the military where you spend 100% of your time on the job.

Yes. But you are talking about basically reestablishing the draft. I disagree with the other person that answered the question by stating that they didn't believe giving guns or handling weapons was a good idea to someone who didn't want to or wasn't capable of handling the weapons. My thoughts are, that the military is a BIG unit, and there are thousands of jobs that don't require a gun or weapon. They are ditch diggers in the military as well as in civilian life.

I thought conservatives want less government interference. Now you want a year of mandatory service. I bet all of you who think it is a good idea are too old to have to serve, right?

No, I believe in a free society of choice instead of the state making people do anything.
