How do you confirm pregnancy in a dog? Is it only by xray or ultrasound? At what point during the cycle can a female become pregnant? Any websites would be appreciated.

Before you ask no Im not breeding my dogs. I am trying to learn more and have a better understanding of breeding and dogs in general.

The only way to confirm a pregnancy is have your vet check it or wait about 63 days after actual mating for pups to arrive. The heat cycle last 21 days. The most fertile time for the female is about 5 days into the cycle. Contact a responsible breeder who does the proper genetic helath testing for the breed and ask about mentoring.

To confirm pregnancy in a dog, there are a few options. First, after about 28 days post-breeding, a blood test can be performed looking for specific hormones. This is called a relaxin test. Ultrasound will be the next option for seeing puppies in-utero. It's really fun to see the hearts beating and try to keep track of all of them in there. You can get an ultrasound done anytime after 35 days, I believe. X-rays are the last way to tell if the dog is pregnant. They can't be performed until about 42 days after breeding because the babies skeletons haven't calcified enough to show up on x-ray before that time. X-rays can be a little misleading as to the quantity of puppies present due to positioning at the time of the film exposure. You can say that "there are at least" this many pups, but maybe more. With ultrasound, you can say, that there are "at least this many live pups" at that time.
Hope that helps with the confirmation of pregnancy part of the questions. The other posts covered conception pretty well.

You can confirm pregnancy both ways by x ray and ultrasound. With x rays you will be able to tell how many pups the mom is carrying. With ultrasound you wont be able to but you can see a heartbeat of a pup or two that will let you know that pregnancy is confirmed.
To confirm exactly when they are ready to be bred is by going to the vet and getting a progesterone test done. It shows exactly when the optimal time is for breeding.
