It's my boss' 39th bday on Friday and we need ideas for a perfect and appropiate gift. He's rich enough, so we don't realize what we could get for him. He loves watches, but expensive ones (so watches are out of question). I thought of a bottle of old wine since 1968 (his birth year). But my colleagues need more ideas. Do you have any? Remember: serious ideas, don't get nasty. Thank you!

Yes, we always give presents to each and every colleague when his birthday comes. So, that's why we can't miss out our boss' bday.

Since he likes watches, how about a nice men's jeweler case , or a display case to put them in ? Wine is a good idea , or how about a bottle of champagne from 1968 ? Does he have any hobbies ? Does he like to read ? an old book . Play Chess? A nice chess set . Is he in to any sports ? Maybe something to go with that sport ?
Good Luck !!! Men are SOOO hard to buy for , bosses are even HARDER !!!

If he's married, you could call his wife and ask her for ideas. Just make sure that the person doing the calling is a non-threatening female. Perhaps his wife would want to participate.
Where I work, sports-related gifts are common for males. Hats, jackets, shirts, tickets, etc. Alcohol is not allowed.
Since he likes watches, do you think he'd enjoy a nice, hard-bound book about antique watches? Gift cards are always a good bet too. You could get one for a sports shop, restaurant, hobby shop, or theme park. Or perhaps tickets to a local play, sporting event, or museum.

You can try some cuffllinks for his shirts or some gift item for him to use in the office like an Interesting penholder or desk card holder this coupled with a cake party will be a good gesture and something nice for him to remember

If he loves old watches, try talking to a watch repair person. Ask about recommendations for some interesting accessories that you could get him...like a watch display case, or a special cleaning kit, etc.

The wine of his year sounds right. Maybe a nice Single Malt if he likes it, with some pricey Swiss chocolates...
A designer tie...

Since you asked what was appropriate, I should point out that no gift to the boss is appropriate. Do you give gifts to all your coworkers? If not, you shouldn't start with your boss.
If you do, than you might want to ask all your coworkers what, frankly, they think of the custom. It may turn out they find it's too much trouble. (Just like you're having now.)

Something for his office is always appropriate. Is he a golfer or a sports fan? If he is then go to a golf store - you will find something he will love.
