firstly i have 12 tattoos so i'm all for them, however you have to be sure that you really want one, and for the right reasons not because your mates have one.
secondly, anywhere that there is not a load of flesh between the bone/joint and skin surface WILL hurt.
The foot hurts, as does parts of the back.
This is obviously your first Tattoo so i would actually suggest some where that is more padded, (namely your bum) and if you become weary of it then it will be hidden. this will also give you a chance to feel what it might be like elsewhere.
the pain factor is all part of getting a tattoo, thus very few artists use numbing agents.
have you researched the five year tattoos? (fade out after five years)
finally, please please don't get a butterfly, they're tacky and you will probable regret it later. get something that represents part of you or your personality.
eg. i have a Polynesian drawing that is the story of my life, (like Robbie Williams has on one of his shoulders) and i am the only person in the world that has it, ia also have a bear claw as i had a native American find out that my primary totem animal was a bear, again this was something that was an outward label of a part of me.
good luck, choose wisely, grit your teeth and get one done!

everybody's pain thresh hold is different-what hurts one person won't hurt another. The back is supposedly one of the most painful-but depends where-I have 2 on mine, the one on my lower back really hurt, but the one on my upper right shoulder didn't....don't take anything to numb the pain as painkillers affect your blood & the ability to clot which can cause problems with tattooing (excessive bleeding etc). You shouldn't really have too much of a problem pain wise there-and even if you did, your skin numbs itself to some degree after a few mins....isn't really that bad-to be honest it's quite an addictive feeling that's why many people go back time & again.

feels like a kitty cat scratching ya...doesnt hurt much at all really.

do NOT use something to numb the skin. Bad idea.

make sure you take care of it.

Fresh Tattoo

Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing

Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

Personally, I don't consider the tattooing process horribly painful. It's more of an irritating sensation, sound, and waiting process. If you have a low tolerance for pain... you may not be a good candidate for a tattoo. But... look at it this way... if they were so very painful... you certainly wouldn't see as many as you do. If it's small, it will only take the artist a few minutes to ink it on anyway. Does it really matter in that case?

The pain depends on the people, some people don't fall anything, other find it horrific, and some people even faint. I personally find it slightly painful, but barable, and definitely worth it.
I found that it felt like a cat scratching, the most painful bit was when they were doing the outline, when they filled it in it kind of tickled.
Proof for me that it didn't hurt a lot (and I hate pain...), is that I'm planning on getting at least 2 more!
Good luck!!

Can't do anything for the pain, you'll just have to suck it up for a bit but it's worth it. But no matter where you put it its not going to be pleasant, all tattoos hurt but areas close to bone, nerve endings and joints tend to hurt more than fatty areas.

Foot would be very painful for a first tattoo and the back might not be as bad, but its essentially up to you. I personally don't think pain should be a deciding factor in this though. You only live once, go for it.

The shoulder isnt supposed to be to bad really they say never to get a tattoo on a big muscle (e.g. upper arm)though because after time when your older it will sag and look all wrinkly and **** but ya thats my knowledge on tattoos. Also anywhere that has minimul flesh like foot as most people said is supposed to hurt the most so im guessing the shoulder should be ok.

the foot is the most painful out of your choice of places. The top of your arm is a good place to start. The pain is like scratching but goes numb after a bit. It is one of those pains you forget like a hangover, cause guaranteed you will do it again.

I have one on my shoulder, the skin is thick there so it didnt hurt, just irritated.
Basically anywhere that is ticklish will hurt, due to the number of nerve endings in that area.

Take a couple of strong pain killers half an hour before you go to have it done or even a valium might help more. Dont put topical creams on where you are having it as it might make the ink run.

Make sure that the tatooist uses fresh needles AND paint (he sticks his fingers into it )as it is a high risk activity for being infected with Hepatitis B/ C and possibly HIV.

GOOD LUCK !

Nearer bone is more painful than fleshy parts. The single outline needle is more painful than the colour multi headed brush thing(?). But that doesn't matter because once you get started you won't stop will you?. It's bearable or only masochists would do it!
Good Luck
