Crabs are amphibians, and live at sea and on shore. RAF aircraft included flying boats (Short Sunderland) and could also operate from aircraft carriers at a pinch. I've nenver known the Army call the RAF 'Crabs' but it was a commonplace term in the Royal Navy.
