I have been working out for a while recently my knees have been bothering me. I usually run but I am thinking about switching to walking with a 10.5 incline. will this slow my weightloss progress down?

You'll burn a few less calories, but taking care of your body is more important. Walk briskly but have care for your joints...swing your arms to get that extra action and those few extra calories burned...if you can, walk further or for a longer period of time than you'd jog.

According to http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calories_burned.htm if 150 lb person walks for 30 mins at 3.5 mph they will burn 144 calories and at 4.5 mph they burn 180 calories. Running for 30 mins at 5.2 mph burns 324 cals, at 6.7 mph burns 396 and 8.6 mph burns 522 cals.

So yes, unless you make an adjustment re: time/distance of your workouts then you will burn fewer calories and your weightloss will slow down. However, better slower weightloss than injuring yourself to the point where you cannot workout at all...right?

Take care of you!

u will have to walk longer to meet the same weight loss goals. but be careful with the incline if ur knees are bothering u. i suggest doing half and half (1 mile run, 1 mile walk). also, if you want to do the elliptical - it is a good sub for running. (just make sure u choose a machine where ur feet are flat on the feet holds, instead of the ones where ur toe is slightly lower than ur heel...this puts more pressure on the knee)

It comes down to your heart rate as to how many calories you burn. Walking doesn't up your heart rate as fast, so you have to walk longer to get the same effect as running.

I'm assuming by your question that you are running on a treadmill. I would suggest you switch to an Eliptical machine, assuming one is available to you. Eliptical machines are similar to excercise bikes, but they mimic the body's natural stride a lot better. You would be able to run on it, and your knees will not get anywhere near the pounding that they get on a treadmill.

Good luck to you on your weight loss goals.

Yes, walking on a treadmill will slow your weight loss.

If you want to keep running, get a new pair of sneakers.

it may slow it down some because your activity will become less intense but if you are still burning the same amount of calories you will be ok
