We are going on a cruise in a month & 1/2 and one of us doesn't have a passport yet. I know we don't need passports until Jan/08, but is good to have one in case of emergency. I just wanted to know if the post office keeps the birth certificate for the time it takes to process the passport.

If you go to the post office they will want to keep the birth certificate. You do have a couple of options. If you are in a place with a passport office you can make an appointment to get one the same day but you have to be leaving on your trip very soon and it will cost you much more (we did this and it cost us $95.00 but that was 7 years ago). You can also obtain a duplicate copy of your birth certificate from the city where you were born (here in NYC its the office of vital records). Just leave that copy there and keep the original.
On another note, you should keep another copy of your birth certificate with you if you decide not to get a passport before you leave the country (just in case).

Yes they sent mine in and I had to get another one for my cruise. They will send it back when I get my passport. Then I'll have an extra one.
