I heard there was also a castle by the same name or close to it somewhere in Italy. Any history buffs out there care to shed some light and help with this random question?

First, Princess's given an incorrect name: it isn't Casnossa but Canossa. It's a very little town in Emilia Romagna region, in Reggio Emilia province. But may be the name is Canosa. That is a small town too, but it is in Puglia region, in the South. Its complete name is Canosa di Puglia, a very, very ancient centre that arrives us from IV°/V° century before BC. In the Roman Empire it was called 'Canusium'. The last name Canosa derives from the name of the city, and you have to know that in the local dialect they pronounce it 'Canòus', "Kah- nòh-ou-s''', ah like in 'are', oh like in 'saw' and the 's' very marked. That could explain why in English there's an 'e' at the end of the name. This name we find in Italy still now, overall in Puglia, and some quantity in Basilicata and Abruzzo regions. Hoping it's the right answer.

Our "family castle" really does exist in Lincolnshire, England. And everyone wanted to brag about it. The problem came up when we finally had proven records about the ancestor, who migrated to Maryland in the 1600's... and the castle wasn't even built until 100 yrs later, by a family of another name. The castle was named for the VILLAGE, not the family. So, a big heads up.
It is very possible that your surname comes from the village itself, as ours did. However, to be accurate, you have to trace your actual lineage from yourself back and document the persons. Your Canose immigrant ancestor could have come from Italy, OR the famly might have had a 200 yr long stop over in France before coming to the US. You never know.
Stop by and see cyndi www.cyndislist.com for a great list of world wide resources, includes how to files, to trace your ancestors reliably.. and also files on how to do Italian research once you get to that point.

Haven't found anything definite, but on one of the genealogy forums someone was asking about the name. That person felt it was Spainish, from the Castillon region, but someone else pointed out at Kanos was a Greek name.

There IS a castle and a town in Italy called Casnossa:

To really know about your name, you'll have to research your ancestry, but this may give you some places to look.

Good luck!

Just check out the internet. There are hundreds of sites that give meanings of names and if you think you know where it from already (i.e. a castle) then just put it in a search engine!
