I was thinking of a great adventure in Australia. Going from Sydney to Perth, traveling by bike, bycicle that is. Averaging around 40 miles a day, Figuring it would take me 3 months to travel from one city to another. I was planing to spend 5 dollars a day for food, and bring camping equipment with me. What would be the best time of year to do this? What it the best possible route, where the traffic is not too heavy, also availability of camping grounds that are not too expensive?

Thank You

omg are you seriously thinking of riding from Sydney to Perth? I wouldnt even want to drive from Sydney to Perth. I wouldnt worry about traffic you wont encouter much for 90% of the trip. You also might want to increase your food budget.

Look I don't want to discourage you but you had better have a good look at a map and at Google Earth first. There are long distances eg 100 -300 km without any kind of habitation and without any kind of water supply. Over a lot of the country, even in the more settled areas you will have to carry ALL your own water.

I once knew a New Zealander who arrived in Brisbane, bought a suitable bicycle with the intention of riding to Cairns, more than 1600km. After about 250km the 18 wheel semitrailers had him frightened to the point where he put his bike and himself on a train. Get into the western roads and the trucks have three trailers which tend to weave about a bit. Heaven help any cyclist who is a little too close, the truck driver might not even notice.

All that said I'd consider some areas as suitable. Country roads in the better watered areas. Your food budget is far too small, unless you carry most of your own.

While the trip can be done, and while you have a good number of choices for routing, and while you would only have traffic concerns for the first 200 K and the last 50K, your food budget is way under, and you will probably need to buy water for many parts of the trip. Unless you can carry at least a gallon of water a day, you will become dingo bait by the time you get to Broken Hill!

Well most of it is desert so the traffic will be pretty much non existant for most of the way. Camping grounds may also be non existant for the majority of the trip...
Autunm would probably be the best time. March April May. Def not summer!
i can't belve your seriously considering this!
You'll need more than $5 for food unless you wanna eat a happy meal at mc donalds every meal. (if there is a maccas)

Well Coolcat, you would be a dead Cat, if you think you can achive this wish. I wonder where you are from !!
There is only one route and most of that is through desert country, so even winter can be hot, and you wouldnt be able to survive on A$5.00 a day !
And you have 100s of Ks of housing, before during and nearing the end of your trip. I dont think the locals would like you pitching a tent on their front lawn !!
But, keep me informed, this could be very interesting.

Yeah i would say that that is not a good idea, maybe shorten it from sydney to melbourne thats way long enough, and allow at least 20 dollars a day on food as you will get xtra hungry doing all that exercise!!

Make sure you do it in winter months, you will die from dehydration otherwise. I don't like your chances of getting across the nullabor.
