First don't be afraid to say what you taste.
Some odd bouquets and flavours are described in wines,
cat pee - sauvignon blanc
diesel - riesling
barnyard - many french reds ( my sommelier calls it poopy wine )
latex - marsanne (i call it balloon flavour 0

What ever your impression is is perfectly correct. Any true wine expert will accept that.

If a wine sucks all the moisture out of your mouth and leaves you with a dry feeling it is very tannic. Many people mistake the impression for dryness of the wine. A very dry wine will cause your mouth to water.

A great way to learn to identify wines is to read wine reviews and taste the wine. Discover how Gewurztraminer tastes like to you,

89/100 Cono Sur Gewurztraminer Limited Release 2006
Big fresh floral, spicy, lychee, grapefruit, honey, orange peel aromas. Fresh, crisp, round entry and fairly dry with good acidity. Elegant with ginger, orange, grapefruit, honey, lychee and mineral flavours. Great food wine and very well balanced with a crisp finish. Try with Indian food, chicken or pork. Incredible value.

You may agree or discover different flavours. Wine tasting is very subjective.

I've added a link. Read a few of AG's reviews it will give you some hints and commonly used descriptive "wine" words and phrases.

Forget all the pretentious rubbish about bouquet and cheeky little wine etc.
You either like it or you don't. You should be able to sense different tastes in red or white wine. Comment on these if you are comfortable. Typical things are for white wine that it has a floral smell or a lemon smell. It could taste of fruit that is not even in the wine. It happens. For red it is usually very fruity and has a wonderful smell. Feels nice when it goes down and can often smell of plums, black current etc. Go with what the wine says to you as your taste buds are totally different to others so they will detect different flavours and smells. Just enjoy it.
If you want to try some alone at home try a South African Shiraz or Merlot and practise tasting and detecting the smells and flavours. Best of luck.

If you are enjoying the wine just say so. Although I would recommend taking along a case full of fancy dress outfits. The reason for this is that you can dress according to what you think the wine merits i.e. if it is a velvety red - out with the crushed velvet smoking jacket, pencil thin moustache, and pearl/ ivory cigarette holder and just comment from there. If nothing else people will remember your statements for eons to come

depends what wine your drinking. Red wine and its all about the tannins and body. White wine and you probably would describe it as crisp/dry if its a sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio or perhaps an oaky chardonnay. chardonnay from the southern hemisphere tends to be alot less oaky than say from northern hemisphere regions like france.

Say things like :
This red's/white's quite nice, I'm no connoisseur, but I'm sure that you (looking at the smarty pants who ordered it) know your wines.
As previously said, go with the flattery.
Then sit back and nod and smile sweetly as the man/woman prattles on about something about which you have no idea or interest.
It all depends on whether you want to get them into bed or not

If you're asking then you're flying in the wrong circle.

I'd go with latrailera2000's answer.

A good belch is quite complimentary.

Ask where the person bought it as it's so nice you'd like to buy some more! Flattery gets you points!
