My full thyroid gland was removed last year to avoid 'Hyper Thyroidism / Thyrotoxicosis'.
I got all the symptoms for Hyperthyrodism on Jan 2006 onwards, I was completly allright before that.
One of the major symptom was 'Protrusion of eye balls with puffy, swollen eyelids'.
My doctor removed my whole thyroid gland on May 13, 2006, as a result I turned as a 'Hypothyrodism' patient.
So now daily I am taking 2 Thyroxin tablets.
Now I am felling perfectly allright.
But my eye lids are still puffy, and both eyes are bulged out. There is no change in my Vission. No pain also.
When ever I am posing to a camera my eyes are automaticaly opening wider, I dont know how this is happening to me.
Will my eyes settle back?

Dear Mr.Periya Pandi
You are having symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease. Like lid retraction( Eyes Opening wider in front of a camera) puffy lids, bulged out eyes etc. Dont worry these are just benign symptoms, you have to bother when u have pain and diminished vision, because they are more serious.

Anyway consult an Ophthalmologist once in three months.

I practise in Chennai and would like to have a detailed look

I also have thyroid disease, your eyes will not go back to the way they were on there own. I have a friend that had an operation to correct the problem and it helped but it wasn't completely back to normal. Thyroid disease affects so much you have probably felt like you have been through alot. also the thyroxin you are taking is a generic drug, not a drug that is consistant with dose. I would ask you doctor if you could take synthroid, I had problems with thyroxin in the past thats why I am suggesting this..try looking at the site , www.synthroid.com

So you had surgery to remove your thyroid as a treatment for Grave's disease, right?

You have to understand, there is no cure for Grave's disease. What you had is only a treatment, and only a treatment for one symptom of Grave's disease at that - hyperthyroidism.

Grave's disease is defined as the presence of TSI, or thyroid stimulating antibodies. And you still have those antibodies. You still have Grave's disease. Only now you have hypothyroidism too.

What you are experiencing with your eyes is called Grave's Eye Disease or Thyroid Eye Disease. It is another symptom of Grave's disease. It is cause by the same antibodies. Now that the antibodies are no longer able to attack you thyroid, they are going after your eyes more aggressively. This is just how the antibodies work.

There are treatments for Thyroid Eye Disease though. There is an orbital decompression surgery that you could look in to, or radiation treatments for your eyes.
