By shape and label. Meaning Burgundy, Bordeaux, etc. bottle. And, the attirbutes of the label.
If you are asking how to describe a specific wine, that's a whole other ballpark. Typically, you'd start by describing colour. For "quickly", I'd use "Dark Plum" or "Slightly Rusty" or "Deep Yellow" or "Nearly Clear" etc.
From there, you'd describe the smell. "Quickly", I'd say "Fruity, slightly Spicy" or "Strong Alcohol, a little sweet" etc.
Then, you move onto taste. First, the initial taste on the tongue. "It starts out very sweet" then, the middle, "Then, softens out" finally, the finish "But then finishes with an amazing citrus."
So, if I were describing a generic Sauv Blanc, I'd say
"It's a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand that's Light to Medium yellow in colour. It smells slightly of pool water and roses. But, it starts out tasting like a fresh peach, gets slightly soft, and then the grapefruit and lime hit you to finish. Fabulous summer and light meal drink."

Do not try to be pretentious. Just describe it as you feel it. If you taste it as fruity then that is how you describe it. Is it too sweet or too dry. Does it release any flavours to you other than grape. Try a bottle of red and white at home and see if you can pick out flavours. Suggest a South African Shiraz which is red and a South African Sauvingon Blanc.
The same from Australia or Chile or also quite good and are under £4 a bottle. When you have tried the Sauvingon Blanc try to have a glass of Chardonnay and see the difference in the taste.
Enjoy what ever you have and never try to be "clever" with your comments as they just sound crummy.

I heard this one in some show: There's only one way to look after a bottle, and that is to empty it!!!
I totally agree with this constatation, so I live my life according to it. Once I start a new bottle of wine, oh, well, you know the rest...
