Take only a general glance at the touristy establishments including restaurants, concentrating on finding out more about local culture, traditions, customs. Try to establish some contact with the locals to find out the best places to see, like markets, small local eateries, shops that cater to the local people, take leisurely walks through the less commercial areas, naturally also sit by some pavement cafes watching the world go by. Very relaxing after all that walk.

Speaking with the locals, smiling at them, eating their traditional food. Go for a walk and breed the new air! Feel Happy!

Visiting dodgey places with my new friends
Going to kindergartens and being shown the artwork and playing forgeign games with children
Chatting with people in cafés that you'd normally never be able to talk to
Becoming a regular somewhere & they know exactly how you like your coffee
Making people smile when you try to speak their language
Taking lots of photos of people, grafitti and monuments.

Discovering the local history ,shops,talking to the locals and generally just discovering some where new this is always exciting :)

accidently ending up in a bad part of town and making it out alive, like I did in both L.A. and Chicago.....I also like to explore the fine dining and nightlife along with the local bands/music scene....not too much into the touristy kind of stuff.
