It depends on the seriousness of the situation. One can fast at ANY time that they feel they are being called to do so. The length of the fast is generally spirit-lead. You will know when it is time to start and when it is time to end the fast. I have a friend who lives in Boston, and she fasted for 17 days after Hurricane Katrina hit us folks down here in Mississippi. She said the Lord just told her she needed to do this and He lead her to know when to stop. Fasting is something you either do or you don't. You can't say, "Oh, well, I'll have to plan my fast around the cook-out next weekend, or the birthday party Tuesday night." It is a God lead activity.
