To some people I think its necessary. They need the idea of someone out there taking care of them. I saw a post last night where the question was something to the effect "Believers, how would your life be different if you found out for sure that there wasn't a god?" One guy said that he would commit suicide as there would be no reason to live. I found that extremely sad. I find plenty of reason to live without god.
I am not judging anyone on this. People do what they have to do. I used to believe, so I have no right to be smug.
