The fact that it is sitting in the stomach is one of the best of the worst kind of things - it's not stuck in the esophagus or sideways in the intentional tract. So the wait see is not abnormal. The stomach acid is there to kill of much of the bacteria on what we ingest as well as to assist in digestion so this coin, since it wont break down in his stomach will basically not do him any harm in the amount of time that the Dr is proposing leaving it there to observe if it will pass on it's own.
If it is still in the stomach in a few days he will more than likely suggest removal. Today, 10 to 20 percent of children who ingest foreign bodies that fail to pass on their own are managed with endoscopy.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU - it will all work out, but as a mum I know that this is very worrisome, But try not to let it scare you too much - kids survive all kids of crazy things.

How should ingested blunt objects such as coins be dealt with?
Blunt objects such as coins that have passed into the stomach do not need to be removed because virtually all of them will be eliminated spontaneously. However, it should be noted that objects that are more than 2.5 cm in maximum diameter are unlikely to pass beyond the pylorus. If the coin is in the esophagus, it can be removed endoscopically using a forceps or retrieval net. Some authorities suggest that it may be better to push the coin into the stomach, where it is easier to grasp or where it can be left to pass spontaneously.
Weekly x-rays should be performed. If an object remains in the same place between weekly films, surgical intervention may be necessary. Lodged foreign bodies can cause hemorrhage, perforation, or a fistula. The time to spontaneous passage is variable and unpredictable, but the mean is four days or so. However, one third of ingested coins were still in the stomach two weeks after ingestion in one series. Objects remaining in the stomach longer than three weeks should be removed endoscopically.

My daughter was 2 years old when she did the same thing. She had a quarter I told her to put it in her piggy bank, a couple mins later I asked if she did. Her reply " No it's in my belly". I bout had a heart attack. I called the E.R they asked if she was breathing "YES" they told me to take her and get an x-ray. Dr. said give it 2 weeks then go back for another 1. Still there , it took about 1 month and she passed it. Still have the x-rays and the quarter!!!

Hi,
When I was younger I accidentally swallowed a penny, and it was also stuck in my stomach. My doctor didn't know what to do, or if it would come out, so he told my mom to check in the toilet every time i use the bathroom to see if it came out. And it did! So I'm sure a quarter is the same way, it will end up in the toilet eventually.

He will be fine! Just give him high fiber foods to help him go number 2 and it shall make its way out of his system. My cousin swalled a quarter once and it took a week for it to come out and he was about 7 or 8. Just keep an eye on him if he starts to complain about a tummy ache. Then take him back to the doctors!

Not sure how big a quarter is, as I live in the UK, but my daughter swallow a five pence peace, when she was three years old, eventually within a week it passed through her body with ease. (A five pence peace is the size of a finger nail approx.)
I think she thought her stomach was her money box because she swallow another one a year later.
Basically if the coin is small enough it will pass through your daughters system. If not your daughter will need surgery, hopefully it will pass naturally.
