Definitely warm olive oil. Don't use lard...the more oily it is, the more difficult it is to wash it off and that in turn damages the hair more. A mix of warm castor oil+warm almond oil also conditions the hair well.

Lard is something every one used to use but probably not very healthy. I would say Olive Oil would be better..to have it work better wrap a warm wet towel over your hair too. But if all else fails use the lard but it would be harder to wash out.

I've never heard of using lard. I know VO5 used to make some small tubes of oil you'd warm up in hot water and use to condition your hair.
If you want to use something from home, I'd go with the Olive Oil.
