Who gets an engagement ring has a lot to do with culture. In some areas in Europe, like Scandinavia and Germany, both the bride-to-be and the groom-to-be get a ring. The rings usually match and are plain bands. When engaged, the ring is worn on the left hand and then switched to the right when married.
The American tradition of the diamond engagement ring was created out of a marketing campaign from De Beers. They romanticized the story about English royalty using a diamond ring for an engagement. Now many couples in the US and Great Britain have a diamond engagement ring.
There really isn't a proper way to get engaged. It's up to you. Hopefully these traditions can help you in determining how you want to get engaged.

Well the traditional way is for the guy to have a ring, get down on one knee and propose. But you do what you feel is right for you and your partner. I didnt get my engagement ring until a few months after the proposal.

the traditional path to follow:-
Is that first the guy will ask the bride to be's father for the hand in marriage.
If the father accepts, the guy can then buy the engagement ring.
The guy takes the girl to somewhere romantic (perhaps where they first met) and get down on one knee and propose.
before Christanity guys and gals got rings.
There should only be a ring, no engagement gift.

I actually proposed to my boyfriend and of course wanted to get him something. I had originally thought about a ring because my friends fiance got an engagment ring so I thought he might like one too. After some careful thought, I decided to go with a gold watch from Birks. He had been admiring this expensive watch every time we went by the store and I really didn't want him spending the money on it. So that is what I ended up getting him! He loved it and it's engraved with our engagment date (so he'll never forget!).
Now, a few months later he re-proposed to me so I actually ended up getting an engagement ring. I had really wanted one but really tried not to pressure hime because it was me who decided to do the proposing.
Getting married in August....can't wait!!

Traditionally, only the woman gets an engagement ring in the Western culture. But no one says you can't start your own tradition.

Traditionally in America the man gives the girl a ring along with the proposal of marriage and her answer of "yes" is considered his gift in return. However, if you want to get him something there is no rule that says you cant.
I personally dont think it necessary because I dont think that women should give thank you gifts for being asked to marry a man, I kind of see it in the same realm as people congratulating a bride (if you dont know, congratulating a bride is very bad manners because it conveys a condescending "congrats, you finally found a man" vibe, you should only congratulate the groom because she said Yes and showed up, you offer the bride "best wishes") you wouldnt say to a bride "glad you got one to ask you and to show up" just as you wouldnt say to a groom "Thank you for asking me" as if he has done you a fovor. Know what I mean?

My fiance brought me my engagement ring.. and proposed..
He doesn't have an engagement ring, but with his wedding band he will be having a few diamonds set..
Some women even propose to their partners so they buy their fiance an engagement... what ever floats your boat..
..Everyone/relationship is different, if you want to get him an engagement ring you can... but i don't think its tradition for a man to have one.
