Its the round ornament thing on the top of a stair bannister

The end post of a railing is called the Newel Post - and the ornamentation on top is called either a Newel post cap, or finial. (BTW - the other upright pieces are called Balustrades - just thought you might like to know)

It's normally called a NEWELL CAP. As it caps a newell post.

finials or end caps I think! curtain pole ornamental ends are also called finials.
