I hope he comes back. Indoor cats still have a small instinct to explore the out-doors. BUt probably he'll be back wanting inside before long. If he's used to being inside, that's where he'll feel more comfortable. You can take the food dish with a little food and rattle it while walking around calling him. If he hears the food, he'll be likely to come running to you.

Is the cat neutered?
If not it may be sometime before he comes back because he's out looking for a female in heat.
If he is neutered then chances are he's just scared and he's not going to come even if you call him.
The food is a good idea, but also when it gets dark take a flashlight outside when looking for him...he's more than likely hiding somewhere fairly close to home in some bushes or in a neighbors garage, under a porch.
Walk through the neighborhood and softly call his name while shining the light into any kind of hiding place.
Also you could call your local humane society and ask if you could borrow a humane trap...this won't hurt the cat at all..you "bait" it with something like warm deboned chicken or tuna when the cat goes in the door shuts behind them.
If you go this route be prepared to check the trap every 30 to 45 minutes because you don't want the cat in there for a long period of time AND there's always the chance you may trap something other than your cat.
Good luck, I hope kitty comes home soon.

I read a story about a couple who went from Dallas to Memphis, to visit some family. They took their cat who had kittens in Memphis. They decided the trip back would be to much for the new mother and left her with the in-laws. When the kittens were old enough to travel they left Memphis, mom and six kittens. Four months later she arrived at their home in Dallas. Three of the kittens were still with her. So, I guess they can find their way home.

Cats have a unique tracking system. I have known cats that moved with the owners more than 10 miles away and then a few days later would show up in my yard. They "came home" because that is where they know as home. They don't understand the concept of moving. The owners had to come to my place about 5 times to get their cat before he finally stayed at their new place.
Don't worry. Some of my cats (indoor/outdoor cats) will be gone for 3-5 days at a time before coming home. Sure, I worry about them but I know they will be back. At least I know that our area is "cat friendly" and there are not many dangers to cats here. But you can be fairly sure that the cat will come home unless someone else takes him and decides to keep him. If he is gone for more than 2 days, you should post some flyers in your area with a picture of the cat and your phone number.
DO NOT put the food bowl outside, though. If this is an indoor cat, you don't want him to get used to eatting outside. If you leave the food out there, he will come back to eat and leave again. You want him to wait outside "meowing" to get inside to where his food is.
Be positive, he'll come back.

~ Urine... their 'spray' has certain oils that let them know their area... kinda like a blood hound... they use their noses to take them to the area of the scent they are given.
~ The kitty is probably having a ball on its own. Like the time you first stayed the nite at your friends home, your parents worried about you too. Give kitty a chance... it will come back to the home that gave it all the love and attention it has enjoyed thus far.
~ Hey... don't EVEN forget to PRAY!... OK? God's creatures are awesome too!
