Hi,
I've asked this before but I now have a new dilemma. Uni is only 5 months away and I still don't know which language to do.
I am definitely doing German because well, I just love it and I already know how to speak / write / read it. But I don't know whether to do Polish, Italian or French along with it.

All have advantages but when I decide I want to do one, I always change my mind. I'm interested in learning all of them and therefore it's why my decision is so hard. Can you tell me your reasons / opinions of what you think would be the better option? Maybe you're Italian, French or Polish and could shine some light on your culture? I'm just looking for some advice and I'd be very grateful!

First question: Are you learning languages for career reasons or just the intellectual challenge or the fun you could be having?
I suggest your spending some time writing down your answer and why. As you think about your reasons, you might find that your plan and your journey become clearer.

For fun or business travel, I'd choose French first: it'll get you to more places (Carribean, Southeast Asia, Louisiana, Quebec, north Africa, for starters).

For movies, a slight tip to the French over Italian, simply because of the sheer volume of French movies over Italian. In fairness, there are plenty of excellent ones in either language, and then there are great ones like Rififi (1955, dir Jules Dassin) which is mostly in French, but has some Italian, too. Imagine watching without having to read subtitles!

Music and stage: Opera: Italian

Polish, if you want the challenges of an eastern European language, including all the spelling issues. This language might be more marketable if you plan to become an interpreter. Also, if you are a 20th century historian: think of the roles Poland played when I mention just 2 cities: Warsaw and Gdansk.

As someone who knows all three languages, I would choose Polish, simply because loads of people already study French and Italian and Polish would probably therefore stand you in better stead. I'm not sure where you live but if you are in the UK Polish is definitely an emerging language in terms of usefulness.

French is widely spoken in business after English and Spanish. More people speak French than Polish or Italian.

Spanish is probably gonna be the most useful language, and therefore your have better chances of actually becoming fluent in it someday, and probably reducing the ammount of time it takes to learn it well.
