My cat has a small scab (singular, about 3mm wide) just below his ear and above the eye in that patch of skin below cat's ears that doesn't have much hair on it.
It's not infected or anything and it's very small - originally I just put it down to a cut because he playfights with his sister all the time.
But I've noticed an identical scab on the other side of his face, which makes me think it could be something else.
Obviously, I'll take him to the vets if they don't clear up, but I wondered if anyone here might know what this could be?

It's definitely not fleas - they have both been frontlined and there is no sign of flea dirt when I comb them. He doesn't seem to be scratching the area either.

My male cat used to get the same thing we ended up taking him to the vet only to find out it was a food allergy. Hes allergic to corn based foods. Also look at the feeding bowl sometimes the plastic ones can irritate their chins as well. All else fails take him to the vet.

Scabs around ears are most commonly the result of ear mite infection. The ears itch, the kittens try to scratch them and sore develop from the scratching around the ears. Since there are scabs on her abdomen as well it is likely that something else may be the problem or that she may have two problems. Fleas can produce enough itchiness for scabs to develop in several spots on the body. Ringworm (a fungal infection) can cause scabby sores sometimes and is often associated with patches of hair loss. Bacterial skin infections and mange are possible in kittens as well. It is probably going to take a visit to your vet to sort through these problems and determine which one is actually present.

It could be that he has fleas and he's been scratching at his ears causing the scabs.
He may have ear mites or an overgrowth of yeast in his ears...that will also cause him to scratch at his ears.
He may even have and allergy of some kind.
Just to be on the safe side I'd have a Vet check him out.
Good luck!

There are lots of good answers up here all ready, but one thing not said, is that it might be ringworm. If the patches look like crusty mold, then it's probably ringworm.
Ringworm is not a worm, but a fungus equivilent to humans Athletes Foot. It's not a huge deal to get all worried about.
An affordable way to get rid of ringworm is to get Neosporin AF, and rub it into afflicted area really well. Then get a good pet friendly disinfectant, and disinfect your house. Make sure the disinfectant kills the herpes virus. Ringworm produces spores that can thrive alone for months, sprouting further outbreaks, and reinfection.
Good Luck to you and your kitties!

It sounds like ear mites as several others have said. But when my cats had ear mites, her ears were black inside. Like dots or something. But you'll need to get some type of medicine for its ears from the vet. Hope your cat gets better.

One of my female cats gets these little scabs too, and they clear up rather well... we have always believed they were from scratching, and the vet agreed that it was the most likely reason. We started trimming her back nails more often, and if you're really paranoid, you can put some antibiotic over-the-counter ointment on it. (Equate - Wal-Mart's brand - sells some.)

more than likely his sister has snagged him with her claws or teeth it happens. one of my sisters kittens has this at the moment and she is moulting which depending on season where you are they could be moulting which cause skin problems. if you are really worried that it could be anything else like ear mite which the cat will scratch at most of the day you will need to him to the vets. try checking his siter she may well have them as well, if it is ear mites she will have them.good luck

He might have ear mights, which is common. He's probably been scratching at his ears.
